I am a rhetoric, health communication, and Veteran health researcher focusing on military and Veteran caregivers, communication, and meaning-making within complex care relationships. I serves as Deputy Director of Strategy Innovation for the TORCH Lab at the University of Utah, a Research Health Science Specialist with the Western Institute of Veterans Research, and Assistant Professor (Research) at UT San Antonio. As a Co-Investigator on the CDMRP-funded MINUTE study, I utilize qualitative, rhetorical, and mixed-methods approaches to examine the impacts of post-traumatic epilepsy and traumatic brain injury on Veterans and their caregivers. My broader bioethical scholarship investigates "ethical distance" in suicide and health research, developing translational frameworks that align rigorous scientific inquiry with the preservation of participant narrative agency.

    Abstract

    Abstract This article describes one school of social work’s innovative online elective course to prepare Masters of Social Work (MSW) students for practice with the military, veterans, and their families. Developed as part of a university-wide Veterans Initiative, this online course keeps the focus on the student veteran and uses best practices of online education. The authors share their strategies and make recommendations for future trainings.
